The doors of Greatwood Lumber & Hardware, LLC officially opened in Bennett, Colorado on January 2, 2001. However, our relationship with the folks on the I-70 corridor goes way back to 1995. That’s because before Greatwood Lumber & Hardware, LLC there was Greatwood Homes, Inc.

In 2000, shortly after Quality Lumber closed their doors for good, Jim Sprecker, president of Greatwood Homes, considered how he might address the need for a new lumberyard in the area. To further this goal, he sought out the experience of his lumber supplier Bill Moore of Moore Lumber & Hardware. With Jim’s entire adult life having been spent in residential construction and Bill’s background as a second generation lumber and hardware dealer, the two of them decided that with a good location and a well-established hardware supplier such as Ace Hardware the odds of success would be pretty good.

After some searching, Jim and Bill tracked down an old Nickerson Farms building. They remember walking into the dirty old restaurant with the floors and walls covered in grease, and thinking, “Yeah, this place just might work.” Not long after, it was transformed into a clean, bright Ace Hardware store.

Time and the absolutely wonderful customers from all along the I-70 corridor have combined to help Greatwood Lumber & Ace Hardware to flourish. As time has passed, we have worked hard to develop a staff that is helpful and knowledgeable, and we are very proud of the service they provide to our customers.

Although there have been significant changes to the economy since we opened, we have continued to strive to be relevant to our community by adding new products and services to our mix. We’ve built up a Garden Center and Nursery greenhouse supervised by Jeri Cretti, long-time Bennett resident and host for over twenty years of the radio show “Gardening with an Altitude”. In The Battery Place, we have a complete line of batteries available to suit nearly every need. Through Ace Hardware, we have recently established an exciting relationship with the well-known and highly respected Craftsman line of tools. Our new computer chip key maker allows us to create keys for most any make or model of car or truck. And, most recently, we have become a dealer for the much sought after Weather Shield line of windows.
